Organ Meats

GAPS Organ Meats

So much of the food that’s available to buy from the shop shelves, doesn’t include a range of good quality animal organ meats.  Buying a whole organic chicken no longer guarantees the inner giblets are included like they used to be, but at least it still comes with it’s own skin, for now.

When I started to eat organic organ meats going through the GAPS Nutritional Protocol, I could physically feel my body receiving the nutrients it had been craving for such a long time, and probably never had the opportunity to enjoy before.

When was the last time you saw or even heard of someone eating a beautiful and tasty animal’s heart for example?  Maybe it sounds too cruel, or doesn’t fit into the modern ideal of everything looking conveniently perfect?  I agree that it took a different way of thinking to even consider buying a few pieces to try from the farm, but knowledge, wisdom, and understanding can change everything when you intentionally pursue them.

Organ meats are in fact the most nutritious meat you can ever give to your body.  Let’s take the vital B vitamins that we all need as an example.  How many of us take B vitamins in the form of a supplement every day because we know we’re deficient?  The problem is that supplements aren’t necessarily in the right form for our body’s to absorb them well, or more times than not, are the synthetic version of the real thing which can also cause other problems.  More specifically, B12 is often found to be a deficiency and used as a treatment for many problems in the body, especially for children struggling with symptoms related to the autism spectrum.

It’s good news then, that all organ meats are high in all the B vitamins, including B12 and folate, and are an excellent source of iron in a bioavailable form.  They also contain many of the trace minerals the body needs in the right portions to each other, like copper, zinc, and magnesium.  I don’t know how many times I found myself looking at the labels of supplement packets when my son was younger, trying to work out the recommended amounts of any given vitamin he was in desperate need of.  It normally meant having to top-up on another one too, and of course, there’s no commercial gain in that?!

Today, I am confident that the well-rounded GAPS Diet is giving his body a range of vitamins, minerals, and amino acids in the form the recovering digestive system can absorb them.  I don’t have to worry about whether his body is receiving the right amounts or analysis the labels to check the food doesn’t include any harmful additions.  There is peace of mind that a range of meats that includes the animal organs, is giving him what he needs for good health.
